Use a source-first process to research affordability programs, compare total costs and protect personal information while checking eligibility.

Begin with current official information

Affordability support may come from government programs, state resources, Tribal programs, community organizations or provider initiatives. One active federal baseline is Lifeline: USAC currently states that qualifying households can receive up to $9.25 per month off phone, internet or bundled service, while qualifying households on Tribal lands can receive up to $34.25 per month. Only one Lifeline discount is allowed per household, and final eligibility and participating-company availability must be verified through the official program.

Do not rely on old Affordable Connectivity Program enrollment pages. The FCC states that ACP ended on June 1, 2024 and is no longer accepting applications or providing monthly discounts. If a website still advertises ACP enrollment or asks for personal information to enroll, verify the claim directly with the FCC or USAC before sharing sensitive information.

Confirm every program at its official source.Program names, eligibility rules, funding and benefits can change. Treat directories as research starting points and rely on the responsible agency or provider for a final decision.

Compare the full household cost

A reduced service price is only one part of the decision. Ask about equipment, installation, activation, taxes, data policies, contract terms, promotion end dates and the regular cost if the discount changes or ends.

Also confirm which technology and service level are available at the exact address. A program may describe an offer broadly while an individual building or location has different serviceability.

Protect personal information

Do not send identity documents, benefit records or payment information to an unfamiliar directory simply because it mentions a program. Navigate to the official source independently and check the domain before entering sensitive details.

Keep a note of the source, the date reviewed and any confirmation number received. If qualification is unclear, contact the administering organization directly rather than assuming that a preliminary screening result is approval.
